How Sleep Loss Affects Fibromyalgia Sufferers Ability To Lose Weight

Fibromyalgia sufferers, are you getting enough sleep? If you are not, you are not alone. According to a recent poll sponsored by the National Sleep Foundation, only about 30 percent of adults reported getting eight or more hours of sleep on weeknights. 52 percent of the adults reported getting eight or more hours of sleep on the weekends. For many of you that are battling fibromyalgia symptoms, this lack of adequate sleep may be major reason you can’t lose weight or to maintain your current weight level.

If you are like thousands of other adults suffering from fibromyalgia, then one of your many goals is to lose weight. Whether you succeed or not may depend on how much good deep sleep you get each night and not so much as the diet you start. Not to say that a proper fibromyalgia diet is not important, because it is.

According to a recent medical study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, sleep loss tends to increase your hunger and affects the body’s metabolism, therefore making it much more difficult to maintain weight loss or to lose weight.

Did you know that a hormone in the body called cortisol, which controls your appetite, has been shown to be greatly affected by sleep loss. This causes you to still feel hungry despite the fact that you have just consumed an adequate amount of food. This leads you to overeat. You are trying to satisfy your cravings for more food.

Not only does the amount of sleep you get affects weight loss but also the quality of sleep as well can affect your weight. It has been proven that decreased amounts of deep sleep or delta sleep have been associated with significantly reduced levels of human growth hormone.

Human Growth hormone or HGH for short, is a protein that helps the body to regulate the proportions of body fat and muscle in adults. One can conclude from this fact that low levels of HGH in the body can lead to increased levels of body fat, therefore making it hard for fibromyalgia sufferers to lose weight or maintain your current weight.
